UFO Catcher: A Captivating Airport Experience

Bringing Fun and Engagement to Transit Passengers

Visual Studio introduces the UFO Catcher, a unique event design at Changi Airport Singapore that combines the excitement of a claw machine with the allure of outer space.

Visual Studio, a renowned design team, conceptualized the UFO Catcher as a way to engage transit passengers and boost sales at the airport. Inspired by the popular doll catch machines, this free-to-participate event allows anyone with a valid boarding pass to try their hand at catching UFO capsules and win shopping vouchers.

The UFO Catcher stands out from other event designs with its innovative approach and interactive gameplay. The main structure is made of wood, adorned with graphics of outer space, creating an immersive atmosphere. To mimic the effect of stars, fairy lights are strategically placed, adding a touch of magic to the experience.

Measuring 5m x 3m, the UFO Catcher is strategically located in the transit area of the airport, attracting the attention of passing passengers. Publicities highlighting the free boarding pass game further entice travelers to participate, increasing their chances of winning shopping vouchers and generating sales in the transit area.

The design team, consisting of 3D designer Alvin Artha Kusuma and graphic designers Fredy Susanto and Ricky, faced several challenges in bringing the UFO Catcher to life. One of the main concerns was integrating the game mechanics of claw machines with the overall event space design. The team successfully created a cohesive experience by incorporating graphic elements that are related to the UFO theme and futuristic aesthetics.

Despite initial concerns about the area being slightly dark, it turned out to be a beneficial aspect, adding to the ambiance of the environment. The dim lighting enhances the excitement of the game and captivates participants, creating a memorable experience.

The UFO Catcher project was initiated in May 2015, with fabrication and installation taking place in July. The event ran until the end of September 2015, providing transit passengers with a unique and engaging activity during their layovers.

Recognized for its outstanding design and impact, the UFO Catcher received the Iron A' Design Award in the Event and Happening Design category in 2016. This prestigious accolade is bestowed upon well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. The UFO Catcher's integration of industry best practices and competent technical characteristics contribute to a better world and provide fulfillment and positive feelings to its participants.
